Route of St. James

The upper Inntal valley between the towns of Imst and Landeck had major importance for post and transport in the Middle Ages.

The upper Inntal valley did not only link the Inntal valley with the Arlberg pass, but also the Reschenpass pass with the Fernpass pass (Germany) via the Via Claudia Augusta. Some 50 meters of the via Claudia Augusta, between Mils and Imst, were uncovered.

Pilgrims will have plenty to see in the surroundings of Imst:

Stift Stams monastery (founded in 1273, the heyday of the Road to Santiago in Middle Europe). The Haiming parish church, that used to be consecrated to St. Jacob, the old Roman bath house in Roppen which is ideal for Kneipp treatments and the Burschlkapelle chapel are always worth a visit.

There are numerous churches and wells in Imst - besides the Assumption parish church with Tirol´s highest tower, there are 17 other churches and chapels in the Imst-Gurgltal valley. On the hiking trail crossing the Kalvarienberg mountain one passes 7 small chapels. The Maria Schnee pilgrimage church in Gunglgrün is a popular destination for pilgrims. The 18 wells of Imst are consecrated to different saints.

An authentic evidence of the Road to Santiago can be found in Obsaurs, only a few kilometers from Imst: a graffito of a pilgrim showing a scallop shell and pilgrims´ hiking poles in the inside of St. Vigil church dating back to 1604.
