Eggenburg and its surrounding area offer you diverse attractions.
From an entirely preserved city wall, three worldfamous museums to idyllic winegardens - everything is there.
The fully preserved town wall encloses the historic city centre with its beautiful houses from the Renaissance and Baroque, its precious churches and the numerous monuments made of the white stone.
The chancellor tower - 590 years old - is one of three tall and several small towers of the fortification of the medieval town. From the tower, which hosts a museum of the uniformed citizen corps of Eggenburg, one can access the wall for the pinnacles walking tour. In the meadow at the chancellor tower one experiences unforgettable festivals.
The powerful parish church St. Stephan surmounts everything. The two towers still stem from the Roman church - choir and nave are gothic. A medieval building miracle! This largest parish church of Lower Austria north of the Danube is considered as the "country version of the Viennese Stephans cathedral".
Yet the size of the Hauptplatz emphasises the importance of the former baronial town of Eggenburg as market place still today.
The pillory attests to the jurisdiction which is connected to the market right. The Adlerbrunnen fountain was built at the end of the 16th century and served as water supply for the houses that did not have their own fountain.
The most beautiful row of houses of the square is the winter row with the "painted house", a sgraffito house from the Renaissance.
Around the city the gentle hills of the wine region as well as the first trees of the Waldviertel await the guest. In the idyllic cellar lanes of the region one can have a rest. Hike or cycle to find mystic stones, rural "Presshäuser", good wines in the region around Eggenburg.
Cinema open air with medieval flair!
Celebrations and festivals shape the cultural life in the town. The Mondscheinkino in the meadow at the chancellor tower is the attraction in summer. Where else do you have that?
"THE MIDDLE AGES ARE ALIVE IN EGGENBURG" is the motto each year for the second weekend in September. Forget modern times - this festival makes you and in particular your children happy in a medieval style!
The Krahuletz Museum is worldfamous. Geologic history can be experienced in a very exciting way, for example at a fossil search in the Eggenbur sea. The prehistory and the early history provide an insight into the world of our ancestors, and in folklore with the clock collection there is time for nostalgia.
The Krahuletz Museum today is not only a place of excursions for many school classes and families, but also science as at home here.
The historic center square of Eggenburg is the setting for the pearls of two great collections: The well-established RRR´s scooters, micro cars and Wurlitzer jukeboxes and Helmut Kronberger’s Kinoptikum, an attraction for cinema- and movie fans.
