Our community comprises the municipalities Großriedenthal, Ottenthal and Neudegg.
The landscape has had an influence on the name of the village: Riedenthal once meant a bare spot in the valley (free of woods), but soon after was named the place of good vineyards ("Weinriede").
Wine has grown consequently on this sunny hills already for a long time. And also today, many excellent wines from our community are a testimony to this fact.
The first appearance of the name is due to the fact of an official quotation in Passau (1110). The estate Riedenthal has been in the ownership of the aristocratic family whose castle has probably been built on the hill here. In 1285, a wood castle has first been mentionned on this hill. Still today, some underground bunkers can be found in this hill.
