The "modern" pilgrim enjoys the freedom of everyday life pressure, the feeling of leisure and the inspiration of the surrounding nature.
Pilgrimage along the Via Sacra has a very long tradition and was started by the monk Magnus from St. Lambrecht.
In the 12th century he set off with a statue of the Virgin Mary carved from the wood of a lime tree, in order to work as a pastor in the area which is now Mariazell.

From Annaberg over the "Holy mountains" to Mariazell
Annaberg – Joachimsberg – Wienerbruck – Josefsberg – Mitterbach –
St. Sebastian – Mariazell
You follow the Lassingtal path from Annaberg to the Joachims church on the "Second Holy Mountain" and to Wienerbruck. Then, after passing several historical pilgrim memorials and always walking offside the federal street, you can start the ascension of the Josef mountain, the "Third Holy Mountain" with its beautiful vicarage which has impressive mural paintings (topic - farm labourers in the primeval forest of the Ötscher mountain around 1830).
Then the route continues to Mitterbach with the border of Lower Austria running along the Erlauf river (4 hours).
Arriving in Styria, the Sebastiani church is situated on the gentle "Fourth Holy Mountain". Then the way leads you along the picturesque Sebastiani path with its rosary shrines to Mariazell (2 hours).
This stage is easily reachable in one day.
