For many centuries, this attractive small town is known mainly due to its excellent wines from world wide known vineyards such as Heiligenstein, Steinhaus, Dechant, etc.
Langenlois was first officially mentioned as "Liubsia" (the lovely), a name still definitely deserved by the largest wine town of these days.
Langenlois offers friends and lovers of the delicious grape juice a whole range of wine events all year long, ranging from several cellar lane parties, the Kamptal valley wine spring, the Tour de Vin up to wine autumn weeks and the cosy Heurigen wine taverns which help contribute to the reputation of this region. Part of this are also the multiply awarded wines of renowned wine growing estates, bringing international recognition to this wine town.
Daily at 11:00 am, birds of prey - such as the Sea Eagle, Emperor´s Eagle, Dwarf Eagle, Eagle-Owl, Hawk, Vulture - are shown in free flight on the panorama terrace. The high art of classical falconry is performed in original Renaissance costumes.
With its precious interiors - furniture and paintings from the 16th to 19th centuries, gothic and baroque works of art, a comprehensive collection of arms and wrought-iron artefacts and a highly-praised collection of local prehistoric objects - the fortress is a special attraction in Lower Austria.
During the 14th century, the big gothic church and its monastery were already the centre of religious and cultural life in the area.
A follower of Jakob Prandtauer, Josef Mungenast, designed the new monastery at the exact same spot as the old one, after the grounds were destroyed by the Swedisch in 1645. Nine magnificent domes with ceiling frescos and outstanding stucco work make the monastery an amazing work of art.
The library, a Book Temple, the Monastery Church with a high altar designed by Troger, the Emperor´s Court and other sights make the Altenburg Monastery one of the main attractions in this region.
